Juss Kaur Practicing the Presence

Juss Kaur

Practicing the Presence

Dr. Kaur creates pieces of art which encompass messages of connection to a higher being or energy. She hand writes repeatedly and minutely the word Waheguru (the mantra – vwihgur U- given by Sikh Gurus to reach enlightenment) in her series called Reflective Mantra Art.  The technique used resembles Pointillism, which was developed in 1886.  Branching from Impressionism it involves paintings in which small, distinct dots of pure color are applied in patterns to form images.  Using vibrant oil pastel colors she creates a similar effect, which represents the particle nature of our Universe whether it is in the form of a solid, liquid or gas.  This hints at the illusionary nature of our world and at the same time implies that the spirit surrounds us. Depending on the size, each piece can contain between 500 to over 10,000 hand-written “Wahegurus”. The word Waheguru is pronounced “Wah-hay- guroo”. Wah means infinite, hay means Thou, and guroo means Higher Self (the Divine Teacher within you) and is similar in essence to Allah-Hu or Om.
