A Historic Look Back Through Photos and Commentary of the Griffintown District of Montreal
Griffintown is the popular name given to this part of Montreal, which existed from the 1820s until the 1960s and was mainly populated by Irish immigrants and their descendants. Griffintown has been an industrial area since the 19th century.
At its peak, it was home to factories, metal workshops, breweries, printing plants, shipping companies and other industries. Over the past 20 years or so, a number of areas adjacent to Griffintown have undergone transformation.
The redevelopment of the Griffintown area is now well underway. Along the Lachine Canal and its opening to pleasure craft gave rise first to recreational and tourist activities south of Wellington. More recently, with new residential re-zoning in place, the area is now attracting many new residents to the various new condominium projects planned and already underway in Griffintown.
The site of Griffintown as the home of Montreal’s new Artists Centre was chosen due to its central location and proximity to the Montreal downtown city core and for the expected growth and potential of this historic Montreal region in the years to come.Griffintown House Circa 1903 Thomas Stacey, the Ice man, circa 1930 Lithograph – looking eastward on Notre Dame Street, 1850 – Public Archives of Canada Montreal Waterfront Lithograph Notre Dame Street circa 1850 Public Achieves Pick up hockey in Basin Street Park circa 1954 - 1944 Waiting beside St. Ann’s Church for the St. Patrick’s Day parade Woodcut - Great St. James Street – circa 1850 Public achieves of Canada Woodcut North East view Notre Dame Street circa 1850 Public achieves of Canada.
